SUMMARY

An epidemiological survey on meningococcal disease has been conducted on
Londrina County (Paraná State), Brazil, during a 11-years interval from January
1965 through December 1975. Data obtained on epidemic an nom epidemic
periods were compared to literature reviewed.
Morbidity ratios were considered very high after international patterns,

coming from 10.03 per hundred thousand inhabitants during non epidemic
periods up to 84.8/100,000 inhabitants on epidemics. Mortality ratios were
still as high as 4.4/100,000 inhabitants during nom epidemic periods and up to

14.0/100,000 inhabitants for epidemic periods. Fatalities lowered to 16.5 percent
during the epidemic period. All those figures tended to increase whenever sudden
temperature oscilation occurred and during the colder months. They were also
significantly greater among males and infants, and significantly smaller among
the population of Japanese origin. Morbidity ratios were higher on urban areas,

but mortality and fatalities ratios on rural areas were comparatively greater.
Accuracy of notifications on hospitalized patients was also studied.
