The vaccination campaigns, carried out on the 21 and 30 months of the epidemic
years, reduced the incidence of the disease in the general population by 31.2% and
by 1.8% in the under 2 age group. However, taking into account the natural growth
trend of the epidemic, estimated at 1.6, the protection given to all inhabitants in
the municipality was 56.5%, and that of those inhabitants vaccinated, over the age
of 3 months, was 72.0%.
The interaction of the diverse factors in the delineation of an epidemiological
process and its control for meningococcal disease, in its epidemic form, is also
discussed.
Bibliographic information about climatic and socio-economic factors together
with that about carriers and immunological aspects of the disease are presented
chronologically.
